Geopolitical volatility, and in particular the war in Ukraine, greatly impact food security worldwide. In combination with climate change, it quickly became a legitimate concern, threatening the resilience of EU food production by jeopardising access to affordable food for many of our fellow citizens.
The EU agri-food supply chain is facing unique challenges, as a result of the rising prices and scarcity of energy and other essential inputs needed to guarantee food autonomy, leading to a compromised food supply chain in the EU, and negatively impacting rural and coastal communities.

18.40h -18.50h Raschad Al-Khafaji – Director, Liaison Office with the European Union and Belgium, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations

EURACTIV Virtual Conference 27-01-2022 09:30 – 10:45am CET
The Farm to Fork strategy, which outlines several targets to green the EU’s agri-food sector, has sparked debate ever since its unveiling in May 2020.
The outcomes of some initial studies on the Farm to Fork’s impact concluded that the Farm to Fork’s goals are in reach but risk a significant reduction in EU food production and farmers’ income, underlining their fears about the strategy’s potential impact on the sector.
Environmental organisations have been quick to highlight the shortcomings of these. They say the studies do not consider the full range of benefits that more sustainable production would bring to the sector.
A main divide between the two sides is that industry wants an overall impact assessment of the Farm to Fork strategy, whereas environmental organisations believe that evaluating each measure in the strategy would be sufficient.
Join this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to discuss what we still do not know about the impact of the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy on farmers, consumers, and the environment. And what policy instruments will be needed to reach the targets?

Innovation: A buzzword or crucial tool for increasing sustainability in the food chain?
HOSTED BY AFCC & EU40
Zoom Online Platform
#EUFarm2Fork has huge expectations from the food chain but is it delivering on its promises to adequately support the food chain?
There is a lot of talk about innovation being the key to the sustainable transition delivered by the Farm to Fork strategy. Is it just a buzzword or are there real mechanism and legislative vehicles to concretely support innovation in the food chain?
Is the food chain innovative enough? Is it ready for the change? What innovation is taking place already in the food chain and what else has to be done in order for innovation to reach the market?
EU40, in collaboration with the Agri Food Chain Coalition, is organising a virtual discussion in the style of its succesful ongoing #EU40Talks sessions. We will bring together innovation specialists, experts of the agrifood industry, as well as European Commission representatives and Members of the European Parliament.
Panel:
– Alexander Bernhuber, MEP (EPP)
– Nathalie Sauze-Vandevyver, Director, DG AGRI – Quality, Research and Innovation, Outreach
– Garlich von Essen, representative AFCC
– Martijn Buijsse, Founder of farmUP, Innovation field specialist
– Alessandro Da Rold, Moderator & Managing Director EU40
